Dolgaya Hstoriya

(A Long History)

The meal dragged on for another hour, and the two beefy, would-be gunmen staggered their way out of the room.

Volodya Kalashnikov pulled the napkin from his lap, checked his watch, and waved a hand. “It is time now for business.”

His heavy Russian accent reminded Gwynn of Anya’s refusal to hide her Eastern Bloc speech.

Everyone stood to leave except Volodya, Anya, and Gwynn. To her surprise, Anya watched Oxana stroll silently into the room. Oxana ignored everyone except Kalashnikov and leaned down beside him, slipping an envelope into his hand. He didn’t look up but slid a finger beneath the flap and emptied the contents onto the table in front of him.

Anya watched with measured interest as Volodya lifted each picture and studied it closely.

After several minutes of staring down at the pictures, Volodya looked up and spoke softly. “You did this?”

Anya stared back at him with the icy glare only Russian women can give, and nodded once but didn’t speak.

He spread the picture on the table and allowed his eyes to play across them once more. “Why?”

Anya said, “Because I was responsible for bringing him to your club. When he came back into club with threats, someone had to deal with him. Because he would have never been there if I hadn’t brought him the night before, I was still responsible for him. We did only what you would have done.”

He placed the photos back into the envelope and slid it down the table. “Are you calling me a murderer?”

“Is not murder. Is self-defense. He was willing to fight and do harm to club. He was very angry, and he was not easy to kill. Someone taught him how to fight.”

He seemed to inhale her words as if experiencing her instead of simply listening. “Someone also taught you to fight and to kill.”

Anya bowed her head. “Yes, this is true. The same masters your grandfather served made me what I am.”

He gave her words time to ring in the air before saying, “My grandfather, Mikhail, designed and built rifle that has killed more men than all other weapons combined. I was born into long line of men who understand and appreciate art of separating enemies from their souls.”

Anya raised her head and met his stare. “I was trained to fight with AK Forty-Seven. This is weapon your grandfather created, and it is magnificent, but as you have seen”—she motioned toward the envelope containing the photos of Tom’s end—“I do not prefer weapons of noise. I prefer silent weapons like your friend at table tonight.”

For the first time, Kalashnikov smiled. “She is not like you, I am afraid. At least, I hope not. I watched her palm knife as if readying to kill you, but this is not what she was doing. She was hoping for chaos so she could kill me.”

Anya frowned. “Kill you? Why would you have someone at your table who wished you dead?”

He laughed. “It was probably not Sun Tzu who first said this, but he gets credit for words .
